Programs

Growing Skills. Creating Opportunities.

Not every classroom has four walls, and some of the most valuable lessons happen when we roll up our sleeves.

At Puzzle Piece Farm, we're developing hands-on, work-based learning opportunities for neurodivergent adults through agriculture and aquaculture. Our goal is to create an environment where participants can explore their interests, develop practical skills, contribute to meaningful projects, and experience the satisfaction of seeing their work come to life.

Our programs are currently in development, and we're excited to share what we're working toward.

01. Agriculture

From Soil to Harvest

There's something rewarding about planting a seed, caring for it, and watching it grow.

Our planned agriculture program will introduce participants to the everyday activities involved in growing and maintaining a working farm. From preparing soil and planting crops to tending garden beds and harvesting produce, participants will have opportunities to learn through direct experience.

Planned Learning Experiences

  • Planting, watering, and maintaining crops

  • Understanding seasonal growing cycles

  • Harvesting, sorting, and preparing produce

  • Learning about sustainable farming practices

  • Using and maintaining basic farming tools safely

  • Working collaboratively to complete daily farm tasks

These experiences are designed to encourage responsibility, organization, problem-solving, and independence while giving participants opportunities to see the results of their efforts.

Our long-term vision includes expanding opportunities through community-supported agriculture, local food partnerships, and farm-to-table experiences.

02. Aquaculture

Learning Beneath the Surface

Farming doesn't stop at the water's edge.

Our planned aquaculture program will introduce participants to the science and daily responsibilities involved in raising and caring for fish. Through hands-on instruction and guided activities, participants will explore how aquaculture systems operate and what it takes to maintain a healthy aquatic environment.

Planned Learning Experiences

  • Understanding fish care and feeding routines

  • Learning the basics of water-quality monitoring

  • Exploring aquaculture equipment and systems

  • Observing fish growth and development

  • Practicing safe handling and maintenance procedures

  • Developing an understanding of responsible aquaculture practices

Beyond learning about fish farming, these experiences will provide opportunities to practice following routines, monitoring changes, maintaining equipment, working safely, and taking responsibility for important daily tasks.

As the program develops, we hope to create opportunities for participants to gain experience in an area of agriculture they may never have considered before.

03. Work-Based Learning

Real Tasks. Real Skills. Real Contributions.

At Puzzle Piece Farm, we believe learning becomes more meaningful when people have opportunities to put their skills to use.

Work-based learning is the foundation of our approach, connecting agriculture and aquaculture activities with practical experiences that support independence, teamwork, communication, problem-solving, and responsibility.

Whether participants are tending crops, caring for fish, organizing supplies, or preparing produce, each activity offers an opportunity to develop skills that extend beyond the farm.

Our approach will emphasize:

  • Independence: Building confidence in completing tasks and managing responsibilities

  • Communication: Practicing asking questions, sharing information, and working with others

  • Problem-Solving: Learning to recognize challenges, make decisions, and adapt

  • Teamwork: Contributing to shared goals and participating in group activities

  • Responsibility: Following routines, caring for equipment, and completing meaningful tasks

  • Skill Development: Exploring individual interests and building practical abilities through repetition and experience

Participants will have opportunities to explore different responsibilities and develop skills at a pace that reflects their individual strengths, abilities, and interests.

Our long-term goal is to create pathways toward volunteer experiences, meaningful employment opportunities, and greater community participation.

Growing Toward What's Next

Good things take time to grow. So do meaningful programs.

We're currently laying the groundwork for our agriculture, aquaculture, and work-based learning initiatives. As we develop our facilities, partnerships, and program structure, we'll share updates about future participation opportunities.

We're not accepting program participants at this time, but we welcome conversations with families, community organizations, agricultural partners, and others interested in helping bring this vision to life.
